I have not been in Lebanon since 1991 but let me guess: pollution due to lack of parks & trees, excessive usage of cars, traffic jams, old cars, power generators, garbage burning, inadequate public transportation...I started worrying about those problems 25 years ago...

definitely these are the reasons. it is a very serious problem in Lebanon in particular, and I am surprised no one tackles this issue here!
